Max Factor: False Lash Effect Mascara Review

I used this mascara a few years ago and I remembered about it recently so I decided to repurchase it. "Max Factor's biggest ever brush with 50% more bristles gives a sweep of never-ending volume for a glamorous look you never thought your own lashes could give you. " Click here if you want to find out more about this mascara. I bought this for £10.99 in Boots in a 3 for 2 offer.

Length: 4/5 This mascara did add some length to my lashes, my lashes are so fair that you can't even see them without mascara so this did make a difference. Although my lashes are already quite long I did find this mascara to be build-able which gave even more length.

Overall Performance: 3/5 I liked this mascara overall, but I didn't find it easy to apply, as you can see in the video it began to clump in areas during the second coat, but a bit of blinking sorted it out eventually. I did feel that it made my lashes look ever so slightly clumpy, I definitely wouldn't put on a third coat. I also find this mascara difficult to remove at night as it is quite pigmented and it also flaked slightly during the day, but it did hold my lashes in place all day. 

Volume: 4/5 This mascara did add good volume to my lashes but I would say that it was a clumpy sort of volume which actually looks good with the right look. I don't think it gave them a 'false' look as I would have liked it to even out my lashes more and give the volumised fan appearance.

Expense: 4/5 For £10.99 this mascara is probably more on the expensive side, but it did give me a nice defined look which was visible from further away (I hate it when you get your lashes looking great only to step back from the mirror and they disappear). It also lats really well but I don't like how difficult it can be to take off, it feels like I'm having to scrub my lashes a bit too much. I would still like to try other Max Factor mascaras to see how they compare.

Overall I like this mascara, but I do prefer the original False Lash Effect Mascara, I found it didn't clump as much and gave a better more even appearance to my lashes.

I like the purple colour of the bottle, it's also the same shape as False Lash Effect

Length: 3/5 This mascara did add some length to my lashes without weighing them down or clumping too much during application. I also liked the definition it gave to my lashes and made them noticeably longer from a distance, I usually find that my lashes disappear when I'm further from a mirror.

Overall Performance: 3/5 I liked this mascara but I do prefer the original False Lash Effect because I think the formula isn't so wet, I found the False Lash Effect Fusion to be slightly too wet which resulted in some clumping and made it difficult to build the mascara. The brush is amazing, the same as the original False Lash Effect, its chunky with graduated bristles that get smaller at the top, the bristles are really small and soft so they don't hurt your eye when applying. I think this mascara is good for separation and definition but I think that's down to the brush. 

It clumped a bit during application of a second coat but it was nothing too bad, it didn't flake or smudge during the day which was the one thing I didn't like about the original False Lash Effect Mascara as I found it flaked onto my cheeks. It came off easily with my normal makeup wipes.

Overall this mascara performed well but in comparison to the False Lash Effect Mascara, this one didn't give as good, even results, however it didn't flake during the day which was really good.

Volume: 4/5 This mascara added a decent amount of volume to my lashes, similar to the False Lash Effect Mascara, but the formula clumped a bit when I applied a second coat which was annoying. What I liked about the volume it gave my lashes was that it was visible from a distance which usually doesn't happen for me because my lashes are so fine.

Expense: 4/5 For £11.99 this mascara is a bit more expensive but I actually liked the results I got, and although I prefer the original False Lash Effect Mascara as the formula is better, I do prefer how the False Lash Fusion doesn't flake but still gives my lashes volume. I will keep this mascara in my makeup drawer but don't know if I will purchase it again because I'm just not in love with it.

Overall I actually quite like this mascara which is no surprise because I always find that Maybelline mascaras give good results. I also really like the packaging, I love lace and think the bottle looks glam and that was actually what made me buy this mascara.

Length: 3/5 This mascara did add some length to my lashes, my lashes are naturally long so adding length is pretty difficult for a mascara and it's not something that bothers me too much, but for those looking for any great length I don't think this one added anything remarkable.

Overall Performance: 4/5 I liked this mascara, the formula was wetter than what I normally like but it actually worked really well and didn't get all over my eyelids and face when applying. I also found the formula to be think enough that I didn't need a second coat, I haven't tried many mascaras that I have only needed one coat before. The brush is a normal bristle styled brush with a slight scoop, this made applying my mascara easier as it scooped my lashes upward all together in the same direction which seemed to help with definition and separation. It didn't clump during application but I didn't need a second coat so if a second coat was applied some clumping might occur.

The mascara didn't flake, smudge or transfer during the day and comes off easily with my normal make up wipes. Overall this mascara made my lashes look really nice, sort of fluttery and fuller, my lashes are usually so fine and I want a mascara to separate my lashes to fan them out to make them look thicker.

Volume: 3/5 This mascara added a standard amount of volume to my lashes, a more natural volume which I actually quite like. I just don't think it gave them a 'false' look. My lashes are so fine that without mascara you can't even see them (see the photo above) so this mascara did well at defining them and giving them some volume.

Expense: 3/5 For £7.99 this mascara is a good price, and for the results I got I am pleased with this mascara all in all, I don't think I would buy it again only because I have other mascaras which give me a similar effect and it's not really the look I am searching for that I can use everyday.

So today was my 22nd birthday! I have the week off but Matt was working all day today so my family decided to come and spend the day with me which was lovely. Today I just have some photos of my presents and my day in general. We had an Indian for lunch which is out favourite and because it was my birthday they gave us a plate of free poppadums!

I have had such a lovely birthday and got to spend it with the people I love most in the world and that is better than anything. I really miss my family and its hard living further away from them, ok it's only just over an hour on the train, but when I see them waving goodbye to me and walking the opposite way down the street I always want to cry because I already miss them so much. Even thought I'm 22 now I still feel like I need my family close to me and I miss them all the time. But this year my parents are moving to the same city as me because they love it so much, so I'm really excited about that. Tonight when Matt gets home we are just going to sit and watch a film and eat some birthday cake!

I have used a couple of Bourjois Mascaras before but never really thought anything of them, I got this little one in a "free gift when you spend over £15".

Overall, I am still undecided with this mascara, I have used it for a few days and some days it goes on really well, other days, like toady, it doesn't apply as well and I really don't know why?

Length: 3/5 I think this mascara added some extra length to my lashes especially after a second coat. my lashes are naturally long so although this mascara may look good in the photo above bare in mind that if you have naturally long lashes, any mascara will help define the length. After applying a second coat my lashes didn't feel weighed down which is good as I like my lashes to have that fluttery effect.

Overall Performance: 3/5 The brush of this mascara is actually huge and I find having the shorter wand give more control when applying. The brush is a normal bristle mascara brush with hundreds of theses bristles giving it a chunky look. The brush allows for some separation but on some groups of lashes it sticks them together which was annoying, however, as I mentioned before I have been using this mascara for a couple of days and it was inconsistent with the effect each day, some days my lashes would look even, fanned out, separated and volumised. Other days it would apply really clumpy and stick my lashes together with an uneven finish, so I really don't like the inconsistency, I need my mascara to deliver the same effect day after day so I don't need to spend ages in the morning on my lashes. The inconsistency could be the mascara drying out after opening, other than that I can't think of anything else that would make its performance so different day to day as I always use the same technique.

The formula is good, it is drier which I prefer but not so dry that it flakes throughout the day, it also didn't transfer or smudge and was easy to take off at night. 

Volume: 3/5 This mascara did add some nice  volume on days I applied it, but on other days it just clumped my lashes together and defined them more. I really don't know why this is because I always use the same technique. I think it could be because the formula has dried out since I opened this which has only been about a week.

Expense: 2/5 This miniature mascara sells for £5.99 which is a decent price but I think that the inconsistency in performance may be down to the formula drying out to quickly? So all in all, I loved the effect the mascara gave my lashes some days, unfortunately I didn't get a photo of it, but the past couple of days my lashes haven't looked as good as when I first used it and I have only been using it for a few days, no more than a week. If this mascara came out in a bigger size, I know Bourjois sell a bigger version but it is slightly different with a different brush, I may have to give it a go.

Dior: Diorshow Iconic Mascara Review

Today I have another mascara review, this time I review the Dior, Diorshow Iconic Mascara in Black.

I bought this mascara for £23.00 in Debenhams, I also had £5 to use on my Debenhams Beauty Card so I put that towards the cost so I only paid £18.00 for it. This was my first Dior mascara, I bought it because my mum loves it and has used it for years, she also said it lasted ages and doesn't dry out, so I thought I would give it a go.

Overall I found this mascara was slightly too wet, almost tacky for me. It made it more difficult to apply and took longer because my lashes kept sticking together. It also created some little clumps which you can see in the shots above. I do love the packaging of this mascara though, it looks great in your makeup bag! Just a classic silver tube with Dior printed all over it, the actual size of the product seems bigger than most mascaras which is surprising for a premium make up brand. The brush is a rubber/plastic one with lots of soft tiny bristles.

Length: 3/5 This mascara did add some extra length to my lashes, but only after a second coat, which unfortunately caused some slight clumping. Adding a second coat took a lot longer as well because the formula was slightly tacky. Because my eye lashes are naturally longer, its difficult to add a huge amount of extra length to them, so it defined my natural length, sculpted them into place while adding a slight curl, this in turn added extra length to my lashes.  I give Diorshow Iconic 3/5 for length, it did add some extra length and help sculpt and curl my lashes, but the formula did clump making it harder to add further coats.

Overall Performance: 3/5 The overall performance of this mascara is decent. The formula I found to be too wet which made it really difficult to apply the mascara whilst separating my lashes as they all stuck together. The formula did clump during the application even on the first coat, but I think this is because the formula is really thick. I like the idea of the brush, it would make a fantastic lash comb! I think, however, due to the formula being so wet and thick it stuck between bristles preventing them from separating my lashes evenly. The mascara didn't flake, transfer or smudge throughout the day and it held my lashes in the same place all day as they were that morning. The also mascara comes off with no difficulty, I used my normal makeup wipes.

The mascara defined my lashes well but didn't give them enough separation as I would have liked. I did like the completed look with my eyeliner as I felt it was a darker more glamorous look, maybe more suitable for special occasions or for going out. I prefer the fanned out look to my eye lashes, this gave some of them a more spiky look.

Volume: 3/5 So the Diorshow Iconic did add voulme to my eyelashes, I think the thicker formula did this, at the same time it did clump slightly which was annoying and took longer to apply. The first coat did add some extra volume but when I applied a second coat, which I usually do with mascara, it started clumping and stuck some of my eye lashes together.

Expense: 2/5 I don't feel the Diorshow Iconic was worth the price I paid for it, I was glad I got my extra £5 off! I love having premium makeup brands and Dior is such a good brand with a great range of beautiful products, but the Iconic didn't live up to my expectations and I think its all down to the formula, it's just too thick for my lashes, maybe because my lashes are so fine it weighs them down and they stick together. I really do love the brush though and if the formula was maybe more whipped it would provide excellent separation with that amazing brush. However, my mum loves this mascara and it looks great on her, she has shorter lashes than me so maybe that's why.

Overall I wouldn't buy the Diorshow Iconic mascara again, (unless it was a present for my mum) and I won't be adding it to my makeup bag. I think this mascara would be better suited for shorter lashes and I am looking forward to trying another Dior mascara in the future, I have my eye on the New Look, watch this space!

Miss Sporty: Studio Lash Mascara Review

Miss Sporty, Studio Lash Mascara

I tried the Miss Sporty Studio Lash Mascara in Black for the first time, so here is my review. The mascara claims: "Ultimate eye opening mascara with Dual Action applicator for instant lash sculpting effect with perfect separation.  Lashes are lifted up to 70% and up to 60% longer. Zero clumps. Smudge and smear proof."

I bought this mascara in Superdrug for £2.99. I haven''t tried any Miss Sporty mascaras before this so I had no idea what to expect. It was a really good price and when I saw the brush I thought I would give it a go, I usually prefer the plastic brushes. I also thought the brush looked similar to the Yves Saint Laurent Babydoll Mascara, I loved this mascara so I thought the Miss Sporty Studio Lash might give me a similar effect at a fraction of the price, maybe something I can use as an every day mascara.

This is my complete look with liquid eyeliner and pencil eye liner.

Overall I really like the look this mascara gives to my eyes, especially when I don't have any eye liner on, it really defines my lashes and does open the eyes to an extent. The brush is easy to use although it can feel slightly sharp when it touches the bottom of the eyelid. The packaging is bright green, so it wont get lost!

The tube is just standard size and packaging is just standard.

Length: 3/5 So this mascara gave me a little bit more length to my eye lashes, because my lashes are so fair you can barely see them so this mascara helped to define them more. It depends what "length" you expect from a mascara, my lashes are naturally long so when this mascara was applied it did make my lashes look longer, if you had shorter lashes this would maybe not give as much length. I have given the Miss Sporty Studio Lash a 3/5 for length because although it did not add a great amount of length, it defined my natural lashes and did sculpt them making them look longer and lifted.

Overall Performance: 4/5 This mascara did perform well, for starters the formula was just right, not too wet and not too dry. It didn't clump during application, although if you apply a lot of coats almost any mascara will clump. The brush was really good, it combed through my lashes well however as I mentioned before the bristles were a little sharp when they came into contact with my eyelid. The mascara didn't flake, smudge or transfer throughout the day, but I did feel my lashes lost a tiny bit of that length and volume by the end of the day, like they deflated a bit. It came off easily with my normal makeup wipes.

The mascara did define my lashes really well and was fantastic at separating my lashes to give me that fanned out effect. This is why I have given 4/5 for overall performance, it loses a mark only because the bristles could be sharp and I felt my lashes lost some of their sculptured look by the end of the day.

Volume: 2/4 This mascara didn't really add much volume to my lashes at all. Maybe with extra coats it would build up giving added volume, however I didn't want my lashes to look clumpy and want a mascara that can add satisfactory volume in 2 coats or less. It defined them really well but didn't make my lashes look any thicker, I have such fine eye lashes so volume is important to me. I did however like the natural look it gave my eyes and I would wear this look on days I was wearing less make up and be quite happy with it. So all in all, this mascara didn't add much extra volume to my natural lashes so I will rate it 2/5.

Expense: 4/5 This mascara is a really great price at only £2.99 and for the price I paid and the results I got I would give this a fair 4/5. While not adding a huge amount of length or volume to my lashes, it did define and separate them and helped to sculpt them into that fanned out look. I would happily use this mascara again but only for days when I am wearing less make up.

I wouldn't buy this mascara again as I don't think I would use it enough to get value for money. I will continue to use this one though for days when I just want definition.  I like it but not enough to make it a staple in my makeup bag. 

The L.O.V.E Test

When I am reviewing and rating mascaras I want to have some sort of rating scheme in place so it is easier to compare mascaras and see which ones are the best. So I have come up with this little rating scheme of my own, I call it the L.O.V.E test. The L.O.V.E stands for; Length, Overall Performance, Volume and Expense. Each category will be scored on a scale of 1-5, 5 being the highest.

Length /5

How much added length the mascara gives to my eye lashes. How much longer do they make my lashes look after a completed application compared to my natural lashes. Was a second coat or third coat of mascara needed. Did the length last the whole day.

Overall Performance /5

The overall look of my lashes, the separation, definition, curl and colour of the mascara. How the mascara lasted during the day, did the mascara flake, smudge or transfer.

I will look at the formula of the mascara, is it too wet, too dry, did the mascara clump easily during application. I also want to look at the condition it leaves my eye lashes in, was it easy to take off, did it damage my lashes at all. I will also look at the brush and packaging of the mascara.

What added volume did it give to my lashes, did it add volume without clumping or grouping lashes together. Did the volume last the whole day. How many coats were needed to achieve desired volume. Did adding extra coats make the mascara clump.

This is my wish list of mascaras I want to try in 2014, I might not get around to reviewing them all, but these are some that have caught my eye and I would like to review in the future.

I have used this mascara before, I think I loved it, but it did dry out quickly and I threw it away and forgot about it. When I see my lashes in photos when I was wearing it they look amazing, why did I stop using it? I am curious to try this one again, and if possible find a cheaper alternative or dupe.

Sounds great to me! The brush of this mascara looks so good, I usually prefer the rubber/plastic brushes, I think they comb my lashes through better. I have only tried one MAC mascara before and I didn’t like it but this one looks like a better brush and sounds like a better formula, it’s a “lightweight whipped formula”, I have however found that these whipped formulas can dry out and flake easily.

Clinique Bottom Lash Mascara £12.00

I have wanted to try this mascara for a while now, I think it's because it looks so cute! It’s like a baby mascara and the packaging it so pretty as well. I have heard good things about this mascara and I think the price is decent, so I will definitely give it a try this year. I never really pay attention to my bottom eyelashes, I just use the same mascara as I do on my top lashes but I really want to try this regardless.

Urban Decay Lush Lash Growth Serum-Infused Conditioning Mascara £15.00

This mascara is near the top of my list with its lengthening properties and conditioning treatment how could it not be, win-win. If it can make my eyelashes look amazing and at the same time condition them and help them grow I would wear this every day.

This mascara is more expensive, but it is Chanel, if the mascara does deliver on all of its claims then it’s worth the £24.00 in my opinion.

Sublime De Chanel £24.00

"Infinite length and curl. An innovative, precious mascara for every-day wear, SUBLIME DE CHANEL expresses a timeless and ideal vision of femininity down to the tips of the lashes."

Another Chanel mascara, maybe a comparison between the two would be good. This one does sound similar to the Inimitable Intense Mascara, but I like the look of this brush, it has super fine bristles which are great for separation and definition.

Lancome Hypnose Doll Eyes Mascara £21.00

I have used this mascara before and remember liking it and it also smelt like roses, the packaging is so cute and I want to try this one again so I can review it properly and start comparing it to my other reviews. There are a few Lancome mascaras I have used in the past, I have liked most of them but I found that similar to the YSL Babydoll, they dried out too quickly.

Chanel BEAUTÉ DES CILS Nourishing Mascara Base £24.00

I currently use the Diorshow primer and I love it, but I am curious to try something new, a comparison of the two would be good. I use my primer every day, it helps condition the lashes and can help your mascara last longer. I really like lash treatments, either in the mascara or as a primer, don’t forget that healthy lashes are the most important thing in finding a perfect mascara for them.

Hopefully at the end of the year I can award one of these mascaras “Mascara of the Year 2014”  If I do get round to trying and BUYING them all, the grand total of all these mascaras is £220.48!
